Second expo of the school year cultivates Cobber involvement with student organizations
The Cobber Expo, traditionally held only once in the fall, was held again this winter for the second time in Concordia’s history to showcase over one hundred on-campus student organizations.
Originally scheduled for Thursday, January 16, the Expo was moved to January 21, to comply with a campus-wide snow day.
The atrium and centrum were filled with curious Cobbers for almost two hours on Tuesday, as they socialized with organization leaders, put their e-mail addresses on group lists and listened to music provided by KORD radio, Concordia’s own student-run radio station.
Put on every year by the Student Involvement Council, —one of the two main sub-branches of the Student Government Association—the expo serves to advertise and foster on-campus involvement.
“The winter expo was designed for new transfer students and Freshman students who wanted to get their bearings before getting involved on campus,” said George Kueppers, the Commissioner of SIC, and coordinator of the Cobber Expo.
The expo is one of the best ways that most organizations successfully recruit members, especially in regards to the Campus Entertainment Commission, the Campus Ministry Commission and the Campus Service Commission, who all saw an abundance of sign ups at the winter expo, this year.
Kueppers urged the importance of on-campus involvement.
“I was never really involved a lot in high school, but when I came to Concordia, I wanted to change that. I was floored by the amount of opportunities Concordia had and the multitude of leadership opportunities it presented,” he said.
SIC is in charge of coming up with fresh ideas to promote general involvement on campus.
They typically advertise through the Tissue Issue—seen in all residence hall bathrooms—and through frequent posts on their Facebook page.
If students are interested in starting a new on-campus organization, SIC reviews requests for new student organizations, reviews budget requests and offers assistance to organization leaders who might want ideas on increasing student involvement in their organizations or just want to improve their success as leaders.
