MOORHEAD- The gentlemen of Concordia are about to look a little scruffier than usual, but this time it may be for a cause. Colleges Against Cancer has turned No Shave November into an opportunity to raise money for cancer research.
Junior Laura Wood, entertainment chair for CAC, said the idea for the event took about two minutes to come up with at the end of a meeting.
“We are trying to find ways to make relay more known throughout the year,” Wood said. “It’s a great way to get the whole campus involved.”
According to Wood, the event involved uploading photos to the Facebook group of your cleanly shaven face at the beginning of November and then throughout the month, posting updates about how your beard-growing is going.
“The social media updates are to bring awareness to their facial hair,” Wood said. “We are looking for lusciousness, creativeness and fullness of beards.”
Toward the end of the month, CAC will have a booth set up in the atrium with photos of the contenders and jars where people can cast votes on which beard they believe is the best. All profits will benefit the American Cancer Society.
Wood said she is nervous about the turnout for the event. “I’m nervous that people aren’t going to do it. This is the building year for this project, and it could be great or it could completely flop,” Wood said.
Senior Michael Hagley had not originally planned to take part in No Shave November, but after hearing about the CAC event, he changed his mind.
“It just seemed like a really cool idea to take something as intrinsically awesome as No Shave November and try to do something positive with it. I mean, besides the joy that beards bring already,” Hagley said.
Wood said if there is high interest in this event, they will keep it going next year. “We’ll blow it up earlier and get more people to know that it’s going on,” Wood said.
Currently, the Facebook group has seven participants with photos uploaded, their clean-shaven faces ready for November to come.
