The Concordia women’s soccer team earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament as they clinched the MIAC post-season conference championship on Saturday.
After 90 minutes and two overtimes of scoreless against Augsburg, the shey secured the win and the bid during a shoot-out.
The Cobbers rode into their eighth MIAC championship appearance in nine seasons coming off of a 1-0 semi-final win over St. Benedict. The win was thanks to sophomore Libby Fransdal’s 45-yard boot off of a free kick on Wednesday.
Saturday’s game against Augsburg saw an onslaught of shots on goal from the Cobber women. They outshot their opponents 17 to 6 with 9 shots on goal compared to the Auggies’ 2.
Concordia dominated possession time throughout regulation and managed to hold off a sudden surge of energy from Augsburg in the following two overtimes.
The stalemate ended with students, alumni and parents alike crowding the field in anticipation as each team, player by player, took the field for penalty kicks. The Cobbers came out on top as freshman Sadie Hayes put the final penalty kick in the back of the net, giving Concordia the win 7-6 in the shoot-out.
From there, the Concordia women advance to their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. There they will face Midwest Conference Tournament champions, Lake Forest of Illinois. The game will take place at a neutral site in Waverly, Iowa at Wartburg College on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m.
