“Sneaky Cobbers” emerges on Instagram

MOORHEAD— On Oct. 7, 2024, an Instagram account called Campus Turkeys Guardians of Truth and Depravity, more widely known as SneakyCobbers, posted their first confession to their page.

“I’m so gay for this one girl and she genuinely has no idea even though we’re super close friends,” the confession wrote.

In less than a month, the page has posted over 70 confessions and gained over 500 followers.

So called “Meme pages” are not new for Concordia College, with now at least three active meme pages for students on campus: CobberCentral, CobbsGoingBananas, and now, SneakyCobbers.

Many students do enjoy the Concordia meme pages on Instagram. Beck Benson, sophomore Communication Studies major, follows all three active accounts.

“I think it’s wild. I think a wall of anonymity makes people say crazy things because they’re protected by not having to own it,” Benson said about SneakyCobbers, “It’s crazy.”

There have been many Cobber themed Instagram pages over the years, including one where they shared only photos of corn. This account may now be inactive, as the last post to @concordia was on Jan. 25, 2024.

@CobbsGoingBananas is likely the meme page that has been around for the longest time, as the first post was on Jan. 16, 2017. Since then, over 250 students have been posted eating bananas on the page.

The account has had a few different Concordia students running this account over the years. First, Colt Lein, 2020 graduate, ran the account during his time at Concordia. Then, Mya Lysne, 2024 graduate, ran the page throughout their years at Concordia. Now, a new and anonymous owner runs the page.

@CobberCentral is a relatively new meme account, but has steadily gained popularity for posting satirical content regarding Concordia College and has been adding to what students call “the Cobber lore,” including the recent satirical “passing” of Concordia’s mascot, Kernel.

With the upcoming presidential election, meme accounts have had some political content posted onto their pages, including @SneakyCobbers posting a plethora of political confessions and @CobberCentral endorsing current Vice President, Kamala Harris, and Minnesota Governor, Tim Walz, for the presidential race.

“As a generation, we don’t watch the news. We don’t look at media. Some people just don’t know what’s going on politically,” Benson said, “The election is really important, and more power to them (Cobber Central).”

The future is uncertain for most meme pages, but the pages don’t seem to be going anywhere. Cobbers can expect more confessions and memes to come out of these pages.
