Spring sports rely heavily on fair weather.
Rain and snow lead to unplayable game facilities. In years past, these teams have had to deal with postponements and cancellations due to weather conditions. This year was no different.
The Track and Field team was able to get outside for their first outdoor meet on March 29.
The women’s tennis team was not able to have an outdoor home match until April 12, and the men did not have one until April 19. However, last year the men were not able to have any outdoor home matches.
The women’s golf team also kicked off their season on April 12.
The baseball team has had three doubleheaders postponed and one game canceled, and the softball team has had as many, if not more.
One positive aspect that the questionable weather brings is communication between Concordia coaches and the coaches of the teams the Cobbers play.
“We have to go through so much with the weather…a bond forms between the coaches in the MIAC,” head baseball coach Bucky Burgau said.
It also affects the team’s practice schedules.
“Now that baseball and softball and tennis are going we have to practice at night two to three times a week,” track and field thrower Cherae Reeves said.
The teams have to share the indoor facilities, which limits practice time for all teams.
The athletes and the coaches are all relieved to finally be outside.
Due to the Minnesota weather, the spring seasons continue after the school year ends.
