Two Concordian writers win awards

Posted on February 2, 2023February 1, 2023 by Paul Sternhagen

This January 26th marked the beginning of the 2022-2023 Minnesota Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper Contest. The Concordian has been submitting issues to the BNC for over 20 years, and 2022 was no exception.

According to the Minnesota Newspaper Association’s website, the purpose of the contest is to “recognize excellence in the various aspects of newspaper journalism so that the practice and profession in Minnesota may be advanced.”

Two student staff members of The Concordian won multiple awards this year.

Maria Klipfel is the current editor-in-chief. | Emma McConville

Maria Klipfel, the current editor-in-chief of The Concordian, won first place in the category of Business Story. Her story covered how Concordia made the decision to outsource in order to find custodial workers due to pandemic-induced workplace shortages.

Klipfel’s second article, a profile piece on athletic director Rachel Bergeson came in second place in the category of Human Interest. A third article from Klipfel detailing the decision by Concordia’s Board of Regents to keep their presidential search confidential earned third place in the category of Government/Public Affairs.

Dominic Erickson was the editor-in-chief from 2021-2022. | Dominic Erickson

Dominic Erickson, the editor-in-chief of The Concordian through 2021-2022 and a recent Concordia alumn, brought back two awards.

The first of Erickson’s awards was a second place in the category of editorial for his letter from the editor in which he discussed the war in Ukraine from his perspective as a child adopted from Ukraine. His second award was a third in the category of Arts and Entertainment for his recap of the Fargo Film Festival.

Each of these award-winning articles can be accessed on the Concordian website. The Concordian staff offers their congratulations to Klipfel and Erickson.
