Right about now, students are itching to get off campus and discover the outside world of Fargo-Moorhead. From movies to art to disc golf, the F-M area has activities that any college student can enjoy for under $10.
The Fargo Theatre, originally built for cinema and vaudeville in 1926, now shows independent films, foreign films and documentaries. It was restored in the late 1990’s with a 1937 art deco feel.
“It’s really magical,” said Sean Volk, Fargo Theatre operations manager. “It’s like you’ve taken a step back in time.”
Try to arrive early to hear the giant Wurlitzer pipe organ before the show.
This week the theatre will feature The Whistleblower, a political thriller about a peacekeeper who uncovers a scandal. Buy a matinee ticket for $6 or evening showtime ticket for $8 with student ID.
The F-M area also has beautiful art museums to check out. Currently the Plains Art Museum has a number of special exhibits. Liz Miller’s “Art = Food” in Café Muse uses felt and creative patterns of bright color to create a fascinating piece. Admission to this museum is free for college students with an ID.
Another art museum right down the street from Concordia is the Rourke Art Gallery Museum. The gallery exhibits over 3,000 Hispanic, African and Native American works in their permanent collection. Senior Ashley N. Dedin will curate the Robert A. Nelson retrospective exhibition for College Night. Over the years, Nelson has received inspiration from American presidents, Buck Roger’s raygun and the Wizard of Oz. Students usually pay $2 for admission, but this Friday, Sept. 23, it is free. They will also give out free grab bags to the first 50 guests.
For those ready to play disc golf, the game sweeping the nation, there are five courses in the area. The closest course to Concordia is located in Woodlawn Park. For those unfamiliar with the game, players throw a flying disk into a basket or target. This 18-hole course is free and open during park hours.
Once the cold rolls around, many don’t want to play sports outside. So another fun place to go is The Sports Bubble, where people can play indoor golf, mini golf or practice at the driving range. Named for the giant bubble roof made of vinyl, it’s held up simply by air. Prices here range from $4 to $10 dollars.
Perhaps it’s time to try on a pair of roller skates like every student used back in middle school gym class. Skateland is an indoor rink in Fargo that is a great place to have fun with friends and get some exercise, too. Admission includes skates, but some prefer roller blades, which can be rented for $3.
There are so many other things activities the F-M area has to offer. Other interesting and fun places include Fargo Air Museum, Hjemkomst Center, Red River Zoo, Roger Maris Museum, Maury Wills Museum, Scheels All Sports, Thunder Road, Fargo Skate Park and the Safari movie theatre.
