Author: Colin Sullivan

My name is Colin Sullivan and I am currently a senior at Concordia College majoring in Psychology, Sociology, and Spanish. Along with my classes, I am the co-President of the Straight and Gay Alliance (SAGA) and also participate in Student Government Association (SGA), Cobber Forensics (Speech and Debate), and Choir. My passions reside within issues of social justice and critically analyzing the ways in which Concordia and society on the whole supports diversity initiatives. I long for an environment within which one's minority status does not pre-determine their likelihood for success. Some other random facts about me: I am a Pisces with an inability to digest gluten. I have a debilitating fear of clowns and public restrooms and refuse to ride bicycles. I am 100% Irish, a recovering scarf addict, and my speaking voice is as loud as the average yell. Please e-mail me at csulliva@cord.edu or tweet me @csulliva09 if you want to chat. I'd love to answer any questions you may have :)

Scarf boy gives thanks and wisdom

Posted on April 23, 2014April 22, 2014 by Colin Sullivan

To the many people that have made it count all these four years Well, this is it. The moment I have been simultaneously wishing for and dreading since I was 12 years old and my brother left for college. This is the end. On May 4, 2014 I will — hopefully — walk across a…

Confessions of a Colin: Words from a soon-to-be alumnus

Posted on April 9, 2014April 8, 2014 by Colin Sullivan

All week, I have been pondering about what I wanted this Concordian article to look like. A “what’s next” for me, a “what my Cobber experience could have been” or a final homage to the loving, albeit fashion backward, Scarf Boy. Well, what’s next for me is that I’m moving to Denver, CO with the…

A letter to Fred Phelps

Posted on March 26, 2014March 25, 2014 by Colin Sullivan

Words for the recently deceased head of the Westboro Baptist Church For most of my adult life, I have hated you. To be clear, this was not a casual type of hatred. I didn’t hate you like I hated Uggs or Crocs. It’s not like how I hated Brynn Samp for telling everyone that I…

Hot or not: Scarf Boy’s official list

Posted on March 19, 2014March 18, 2014 by Colin Sullivan

Things that are, like, TOTALLY HOT Campus Tours – Giving campus tours as a senior is one of the most fun and interesting experiences that any senior could have. While I work in the admissions office, do not allow me to steal all of these reminiscent opportunities to explore campus. Grab a friend and just…

Aloha to privilege: Hawaii’s hidden history

Posted on March 12, 2014March 11, 2014 by Colin Sullivan

I did not get sunburnt in Hawaii. NOT AT ALL. There were plenty of opportunities with incredibly hot weather and minimal shade, but I used protection and my Irish skin remained pasty white. This incredible feat deserves separate recognition. Moment of silence for Colin! The Burnless Part-Ginger Boy Wonder. While my skin was not red…

Dear Finn

Posted on February 19, 2014April 28, 2014 by Colin Sullivan

A letter from Scarf Boy to his nephew In case you haven’t heard already, I was supposed to be an uncle. However, after a long and difficult labor, my sister delivered Finnegan James Loch and he was not breathing. After doing everything they possibly could, the doctors pronounced my nephew dead. I’m experiencing the worst…

Students to perform original music at Dance Marathon Benefit

Posted on February 12, 2014February 12, 2014 by Colin Sullivan

Singer/songwriter Dylan Jones, a Concordia senior, and writer/rapper Jack Yakowicz, a Concordia junior, began their musical bromance this past summer. “We met in June and bonded over the fact that we’re two of the only people on campus who write our own lyrics. We’re legitimate fans of each other’s music, so there’s a relationship,” Yakowicz…

10 tips for getting a date with Scarf Boy

Posted on February 12, 2014February 11, 2014 by Colin Sullivan

When I was a senior in high school, a friend – yes, I had friends – introduced me to a website called futureme.org. Futureme.org is a website that allows individuals to send an e-mail that will not be delivered until a specific future date. Essentially, it’s an electronic time capsule, but without the digging. As…

Gender-neutral bathrooms planned

Posted on February 5, 2014February 5, 2014 by Colin Sullivan

Jeff Miller, a Concordia senior and Mr. Concordia contestant, does not feel safe using most of the bathrooms on campus. “Gendered bathrooms are very difficult for me to use because of experiences I’ve had in them, even on this campus,” Miller said. “I’ve received glares, questioning glances and death threats.” Miller is a transgender student…

I want to go on a date with Jesus

Posted on February 5, 2014February 5, 2014 by Colin Sullivan

The Jesus of my childhood was the man! He was a tall, white guy in a bright, white robe with long, flowing brunette locks. He gave food to hungry people, performed several magic tricks with his all-male cohort and then peaced-out back to heaven to wait for everyone else to join him. Essentially, he was…
