10) Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
A fresh take on the classic satirical news genre perfected by Stewart and Colbert. John Oliver is a bit less charismatic but nonetheless interesting, placing more focus on obscure or complex issues, and incorporating more legitimate journalism.
Goofy and strange in all the right ways. By far the best character is Tina, a misunderstood adolescent with the voice of a man.
Creators and actresses Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson began Broad City as a web series about two twenty-somethings in NYC. Sounds like nothing new, but Broad City, which has now completed one season on Comedy Central, is a marvelous and refreshing perspective, as groundbreaking in its realism as Lena Dunham’s Girls. Ilana and Abbi are by turns foolish and hilarious, wholly human and perfectly imperfect.
This shows just continues to become more and more hilarious each season.
6) American Horror Story: Freak Show
When this concept was announced – a circus show set in the 1950s – I was really excited to see where it was going to go. It’s definitely one of the more unsettling and creepier seasons.
This season they added Frozen to the magical world and they did it in a brilliant way. The writers do a great job of meshing all of the fairy tale stories into one. It’s well worth the watch.
Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein bring back the characters guaranteed to get you laughing and a few new ones that bring the show on a whole new level of hilarity.
The second season of OITNB is just as chaotic and explosive as the first, but dives further into the lives of the individual prisoners. No longer limited by Piper’s perspective, we gain insight into the past and personality of Litchfield Prison’s fascinating residents. Prepare for violence, drug deals, pregnancy, betrayal, corruption, and humor – the intoxicating combination that makes OITNB so acutely powerful.
Parks has earned its place as our first and second spot because it’s at the forefront of the comedy canon. Its stars Amy Poehler, Chris Pratt, Nick Offerman, Aziz Ansari, and Rashida Jones among others have become well-known faces, and after six brilliant seasons, the Pawnee Parks & Rec Department has become a beloved fixture of American television. The seventh and final season begins in January.
