MOORHEAD — The Women’s basketball team cruised to an easy victory over Augsburg University, extending their win streak to three and their season record to 10-3 on Monday, Jan. 15 in Memorial Auditorium.
Early on the Cobbers were locked in a low scoring defensive battle leading the Auggies 13-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Cobbers defense was stifling holding Augsburg to 20% shooting from the floor along with six forced turnovers. While the offense wasn’t explosive early on, Concordia had a balanced attack with six different Cobbers scoring in the first quarter.
The offensive production started to pick up for both teams in the second quarter. However, the Cobbers still managed to force six more turnovers which helped to build their lead. Concordia senior guard Emily Beseman had a big quarter scoring seven points, capping it off with a buzzer-beating three pointer as time expired in the half. The Cobbers headed into the locker room with a 12 point edge leading the Auggies 32-20.
It was much of the same in the third quarter with the Cobbers scoring another 22 points and extending their lead to 18. This time it was Junior guard Carlee Sieben with an impressive quarter scoring seven points on four shots.
With such a big lead, the Cobbers were able to coast to a blowout victory in the fourth quarter with no serious comeback attempt by the Auggies. As the final buzzer rang the Cobbers were able to walk away feeling good with a 72-52 victory.
It was an all around dominant showing from Concordia. On the defensive end they held Augsburg to 32.8% shooting from the field and 17.4% shooting from three as well as forcing 21 turnovers which resulted in 18 Cobber points.
On the offensive side of the ball Sieben and Beseman led the way as the top scorers. Beseman tallied six rebounds, four assists and five steals to go along with 16 points on 4 out of 9 shooting and 6 out of 6 from the freethrow line. Sieben also had an impressive game with three assists and 16 points on 4 out of 9 shooting from three point range.
Although it was an impressive win, after the game both head coach Kim Wagers and Sieben mentioned some things they thought the team could’ve done better and can improve on going forward.
“I would say offensive rebounding. We were kinda jogging back… so I’d like to see a few more second chances” said Wagers.
“Definitely in the second half I thought our rebounding could’ve been better… continuing to work on both our press defense and then moving the ball on offense” said Sieben.
The game against Augsburg marked the start of a four game homestand which concluded on Wednesday Jan 24 against Macalester. Both coach Wagers and Sieben talked about what it means to be back home for a while after a long stretch of games on the road.
“It’s amazing, we’ve been waiting a really long time to play here again… one of our goals is always to go undefeated at Memorial (Auditorium)” said Wagers.
“It feels really good, I felt like our first 12 games we were away for at least 80% of them, so it feels good now we’ll be home for a while” said Sieben.
The women’s basketball team will look to continue their winning ways in the second half of the season. Their next home game will take place in Memorial Auditorium at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31 as they take on the Saint Mary’s University Cardinals.
