This past Saturday, the Cobbers took on the St. Scholastica Saints in a 35-0 winning effort at the newly renovated Jake Christianson Stadium
This game was the Cobbers home-opener for the year, as their first game of the year was moved to Minnesota State University Moorhead due to delays in the installation of the new turf field. This game needed to be a statement game for the Cobbers, as the Saint have been a notably weaker MIAC team, failing to win more than three games for the last couple seasons
Cooper Mattern threw for four touchdowns with 186 yards and a single interception. There were five different Cobbers scoring in this contest, with Owen Miller, Davion Henderson, Grant Mages, and Jordan Summers claiming receiving touchdowns, while Mason Hughes had the sole rushing touchdown.
The started off well for the Cobbers, scoring on two of their first four possessions taking an early 14-0 lead mid-way through the second quarter. The defense held firm, not allowing a single kick attempt for the Saints.
The Cobbers came out swinging in the second half, posting another 21 points in the second half. Though the game was practically over, the Saints made a run late in the fourth in an attempt to avoid a closeout loss. With the clock running down, the Cobbers played four downs of consistent defense, stopping the Saints on the 3-yard line, leading to a loss of possession via downs.
They will have two challenging games coming up, with a road game next weekend vs. Carleton, and a home game vs. St. Johns on Oct. 12.
