MOORHEAD – On Nov. 19, Concordia students and Fargo-Moorhead community members will have the opportunity to shop locally, right on campus.
Crisavy Seeman is a business marketing major with a minor in communication studies as well as the president of the Marketing club. She holds a certificate in the Entrepreneurial Mindset.
Business major Mikayla Barnick is the social media manager and graphic designer for the Marketing Club. Barnick also has her own photography business, Exposures by Mikayla Jean.
Hosted in collaboration of Concordia’s Marketing Club and Entrepreneurship Club, the Cobber Market will be held 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Knutson Campus Center Centrum. Both student entrepreneurs and local businesses will be featured as vendors selling their various products.
“Both our clubs believe in the importance of Cobbers supporting Cobbers, and that’s why we have opened the event to faculty and alumni as well! Additionally, we have a handful of vendors coming in from the local Fargo-Moorhead community too, providing all students the valuable opportunity to network with successful business owners!” Seeman says.
For the selection process, student vendors were not given many criteria, as Seeman mentions how the clubs “want to support all students” and “boost their presence.”
“We currently have 10 confirmed vendors. To select vendors, we reached out to students we knew had started their own businesses, shared announcements on Instagram, and had Professor Scarpin send an invitation to business school students,” said Barnick
As for local businesses, there were slightly stronger standards due to the clubs’ desire to support the campus demographic.
“To be frank, we as students don’t have the biggest financial wiggle room, and we kept that in consideration when seeking out outside vendors so that whoever we bring in would fit a realistic price range of products for the student wallet. We also thought about what would make sense for students to be interested in purchasing – such as preferring tangible goods like necklaces and clothing instead of lawn or childcare services,” Seeman explains.
There will be a variety of goods sold, from delicious treats to unique gifts, with Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Years, etc. all just around the corner. There will also be a door prize drawing for lucky attendees.
Seeman mentions “photography services, sourdough, socks, necklaces, spa products, 3D art, art commissions, and even clothing/swimwear.”
To fundraise for marketing, there will also be a vendor selling Concordia tote bags, that Barnick herself designed.
Diving into the mission of the market itself, Seeman notes how “Concordia and the Fargo-Moorhead area are both huge on community.”
“What better way to build and support your community than by bringing people together to support their friends and create meaningful connections, while also treating their loved ones to some sweet gifts!” Seeman says
“The mission of the Cobber Market is to give students a platform to showcase their hard work and entrepreneurial skills, while also giving other students the perfect opportunity to support them as the holiday season approaches,” Seeman continues.
In Barnick’s words, “The cobber market’s goal is to increase awareness of our student-owned businesses and build new connections.”
“It is overall a great networking opportunity, and it is a great place for the marketing club to show off our recent rebrand, encouraging students to join!” Barnick concludes.
