Cobber Women’s Basketball team storms ahead

The 2022-2023 season has been a hit for the Cobber Women’s Basketball team, and they are not finished yet. Putting up a winning record of 22 wins and 4 losses, they are looking forward to these next couple weeks, playing for the MIAC Championship and from there playing in the NCAA tournament..

The team has a total 21 girls, seven of them are incoming freshmen and one is a transfer. Comparing last season to this season, nothing crucial has changed with the team demographics.

Junior Maddie Guler said, “All of us are more driven. The huge difference is the age. We have all matured.”

The team chemistry has been huge this season, which has led them to securing a spot in playoffs and increasing their drive to finish the season strong. The last time the Women’s Basketball team went to the playoffs was in 2016.

Recently achieving her 1,000th career point, senior Emily Beseman said, “This season is enjoyable, we hangout more outside of basketball which benefits us within the season.”

While this is Head Coach Kimberly Wager’s only fourth season with the Cobbers, she is contributing immensely to their continuous drive by bringing the team together and improving their chemistry on and off the court. Looking into the next couple weeks all the girls are itching to bring forth their best.

“She keeps things positive and reminds us to all work together as one,” said Guler.

On Friday, February 24, 2023 the girls took on Hamline in Moorhead. They finished with a seven point lead, the final score being 74 to 67.

“I am looking forward to the opportunities to come,” said first year Lauren Halverson.

The Cobber Women’s basketball team has only had two appearances in the NCAA tournament. With these appearances being over 20 years ago, everyone is anticipating the weeks to come. While the fans are looking forward to the championship games, the players have thoughts.

“I think practice is going to be a huge factor, preparing for what we have to come,” said Beseman.

Coming up on their road to the NCAA tournament, the girls take on Gustavus Adolphus Sunday, February 26, 2023.
